Real-time KP tracking, 150km cloud-chasing, and professional photography coaching. We don't sit and hope — we go where the aurora is.
Our flagship aurora hunting tour is unlike any passive "wait and see" experience. Armed with real-time space weather data, live KP-index monitoring, and an intimate knowledge of the Kuusamo wilderness, our guides actively seek the perfect viewing location — every single night.
Cloud cover across a 150km radius is tracked in real time. If conditions are better 80km to the north, we drive north. The aurora does not wait, and neither do we. This dynamic approach, combined with a maximum group size of just 8 guests, is why our aurora sighting rate remains unmatched in Finnish Lapland.
And if the lights truly do not cooperate? Your next tour is completely free — no conditions, no small print.
Every detail is designed to maximise your chances and deepen your experience under the polar sky.
Our guides monitor live geomagnetic data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute and international aurora forecasting services throughout the evening. We know the moment conditions become favourable — and we move.
Cloud cover is the aurora hunter's greatest enemy. We track weather across a vast radius in real time and drive to clear skies — reaching remote locations far from light pollution, inaccessible to independent travellers.
Shooting the aurora is a technical skill. Our guides teach you the exact camera settings — aperture, ISO, shutter speed, manual focus — so you capture sharp, vivid images whatever camera you have. Tripod available on request.
We strictly cap every departure at eight guests. This is not a bus tour. It is a small-group wilderness experience with personal guide attention, silent viewing spots, and space to take in one of nature's greatest spectacles.
Age: Minimum age 8 years. All ages welcome from 8 upwards — young teenagers frequently call this the most spectacular thing they have ever seen.
Departure times: Tours depart nightly between 8:00 and 9:30pm depending on seasonal darkness. Exact departure confirmed 24 hours before.
Location: The exact viewing location is decided on the night, based on live aurora forecasts and cloud cover. We may drive up to 150km from Ruka.
Season: Runs September through March. Peak aurora season is October–February.
Clothing: Finnish winters are cold. We recommend thermal base layers, a proper winter jacket, insulated boots, hat, and gloves. We will advise you in detail after booking.
Payment: Secure your place with a €99 deposit. Balance due 48 hours before your tour date.
If the northern lights are not visible during your tour — due to cloud cover, low solar activity, or any other factor outside your control — your next Aurora Hunting Photography Tour is completely free of charge. No deposits, no conditions, no arguments. We book you in for the next available date that suits you. This guarantee has held for eight years and we are proud of it.
Not at all. Our guides work with whatever equipment you have — DSLR, mirrorless, compact camera, or even a modern smartphone with manual mode. The key techniques (long exposure, wide aperture, high ISO, manual focus on infinity) apply to all cameras. Many of our best guest photos have been taken on smartphones. If you would like to use a tripod, simply let us know when booking and we will have one ready.
Temperatures in Ruka from October to February typically range from −5°C to −25°C, occasionally colder. Standing still outdoors in the dark means you feel the cold more than when active. We send every guest a detailed clothing guide after booking. The essentials: thermal base layers (merino wool or synthetic — not cotton), mid-layer fleece or down, a proper arctic-rated outer jacket, insulated waterproof boots, warm hat, balaclava, and liner gloves inside thick mitts. Hand warmers are always a good idea.
Departure is between 8:00pm and 9:30pm depending on the time of year — darkness falls earlier in mid-winter. We confirm your exact pickup time 24 hours before your tour. The tour lasts between 4 and 6 hours depending on aurora activity. If the lights are putting on a spectacular show, we stay out as long as you want to. You will be back at your accommodation by around 2:00–3:00am at the latest.
