Getting from Ruka to Ivalo in the depths of the Arctic winter takes a little planning: there is no direct train, roads are snow-covered, and daylight is short. Here are your realistic options, honestly compared.
Option 1: Private transfer (easiest)
A private transfer is the simplest, warmest way to travel. A modern van collects your group of up to 8 from your door in Ruka or Kuusamo and drives you straight to Ivalo — €700 for the whole vehicle, one way, with luggage space and a comfort stop. No connections, no waiting in the cold, no shared timetable.
Option 2: Public bus
Long-distance buses do run through Lapland, but connections between Kuusamo and the Ivalo–Saariselkä area in winter are limited and often involve changes and long waits. Budget-friendly, but slow, and you carry your own bags between stops in sub-zero temperatures.
Option 3: Self-drive
Renting a car gives freedom, but winter driving in Lapland means ice, snow, reindeer on the roads and very limited daylight. It suits confident winter drivers only — many visitors prefer to let a local, English-speaking driver handle the conditions.
